Issue 179 “UNION NEWS” May 2025
MULLINGAR UNION OF PARISHES
Dear Parishioners,
New Rector
Bishop Pat Storey and the Parish nominators announced on 16 th March the appointment of
Archdeacon Ian Horner as the newly appointed rector of Mullingar Union of Parishes.
Ian is originally from Greystones in Co Wicklow. He has spent the last ten years serving in
the Bailieborough Group of parishes in the diocese of Kilmore, where he is also an
archdeacon.
He is married to Jenny, and they have two boys called, Sam (12) and Leo (10). Ian loves
music and is no longer ashamed to say that he is a big Aston Villa fan! He has a passion for
the Scriptures, church renewal, youth and children’s work, and he enjoys a good visit and
chat over a cup of tea.
The date of the Institution has been announced as Thursday 19 th June at 7:30pm in All
Saints and all parishioners are encouraged to attend. We, the parishioners of Mullingar Union
extend a warm welcome to Ian, Jenny, Sam and Leo.
Directly after the service there will be a short reception in The greville Arms Hotel

.
General Easter Vestry Meeting
The Easter Vestry meeting is on Thursday 15th May at 7.30pm in All Saints’ Hall and all
parishioners are encouraged to attend.
Exams
We wish all the young people of the parish well that are sitting state exams in June especially
those who are finishing secondary school and about to embark on a new chapter in their
lives.
Whist Drives
A huge thank you to all the people who attended, organised, and help set up for each whist
drive, the people who provided and helped with the delicious teas, the people who organised
the prizes and anyone who donated prizes. We look forward to seeing everyone and new
faces again in the new season.
Youth Activities.
Unfortunately, due to the shortage of Youth Leaders we will be unable to provide neither
Sunday School nor Board Games Saturday for the month of May.
Recently, Tori Trower was one of only two young people from Ireland to attend the
European Youth Parliament in Strasburg and Tori also had the honour of addressing that
assembly. Her twin brother, David, was placed second in the National Orienteering Event.
Well done to both outstanding young parishioners. David and Tori’s parents, Derek and
Vicky and grandparents Norman and Valerie Black are rightly very proud.
Early in May John Webster leaves our shores for Toronto to pursue his career as a chef. John
has been studying in Sligo whilst pursuing his career in Castlebar for the past few years. We
join with John’s parents, David and Pamela and family in wishing John every success and
look forward to seeing him become Michelin starred!
Condolences
We express our sincere sympathy to the family of Pat Fletcher who passed away recently.
He was the treasurer of Mullingar Union of Parishes for many years and played an important
part of the Church and the business community in Mullingar.
Condolences to Anna Kiernan and her family on the passing of her father Pastor Jerry Lion
who lived in Florida, America following a very short illness.
Sympathies to Jason Clendenning and his family on the passing of Grandmother in Longford.
