MULLINGAR UNION OF PARISHES<\/p>\n

Dear Parishioners,
\nWe hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer and had an opportunity for
\nsome rest. School term will have commenced as we go to print and we send best
\nwishes to all Primary and Secondary School pupils, students, parents, teachers
\nand teaching support staff for the academic year ahead. We send special good
\nwishes to all Leaving Cert Students and wish them well with all their new
\nventures.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Thank You\u2019s<\/strong>
\nThank you to the team who have maintained the Rectory grounds over the
\nsummer and plan to keep an eye on it over the autumn. Thanks also to those
\nwho have attended to the maintenance tasks with the Rectory. A big thank you
\nto all who have conducted services across all four churches and provided
\ntea\/coffee afterwards.<\/p>\n

We will continue to have a variety of services over the
\ncoming months and look forward to the first service to mark the Harvest
\ncelebrations in Almoritia on the 15th September at 7pm. There will be further
\nHarvest services in September and October.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Mullingar Famine Graveyard<\/strong>
\nThe annual commemoration service at Mullingar\u2019s\u00a0Famine Graveyard took
\nplace on 28thJune. The Famine Graveyard, in which hundreds are buried
\nwithout name or marker, was neglected for many years. This is now the venue
\nfor this annual ecumenical service of prayer and music and a place now visited
\nby many.\u00a0 The Church of Ireland was represented at this important event by
\nCanon Patrick Lawrence.<\/p>\n

Coffee Morning for Hospice:<\/strong> Thursday 26 September 10.30am – 1.30pm in
\nAll Saints\u2019. This is in support of the national fundraiser taking place on this day.<\/p>\n

Children\/ Youth<\/strong>
\nSaturday Board Games 7th September 2pm- 3pm in All Saints\u2019 Church. All
\nwelcome.<\/p>\n

Sunday School 15th September at 10am in All Saints\u2019 Church.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Hub, Mullingar<\/strong> Friday 20th September 7.30 -9pm for Secondary School
\nChildren<\/p>\n

Whist Drives<\/strong>
\nThe Mullingar Whist Drives will commence on Friday 4th October\u00a0at 8pm. If
\nyou have any unwanted gifts or if you would like to donate a prize please give
\nto one of the Church Wardens. You can also contact Emma 087 6374131 or
\nAnna 086 8131132. There will also be Whist Drives in Mullingar on Friday 1st
\nNovember and 6 th December. All start at 8pm.<\/p>\n

Whist Refresher:<\/strong> We are holding a social introduction\/ refresher to Whist for
\nnew\/ lapsed players on Saturday 21st September from 7pm to 9pm. There will
\nbe experienced players on hand to talk through the rules of Whist and play a
\nfew practice games. Light refreshments served. All ages welcome, just pop in
\nover these 2 hours.<\/p>\n

Bereavement<\/strong>
\nWe extend our heartfelt sympathy to the Webster family on the death of David\u2019s
\nmother in Wicklow in June. Enid was laid to rest\u00a0following a funeral service of
\nthanksgiving in Nun\u2019s Cross Church, Ashford, Co Wicklow.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Baptism<\/strong>
\nIn August, we welcomed into God\u2019s family Isabel Grace Vaz through Holy
\nBaptism in All Saints\u2019 Church.\u00a0 Isabel currently resides with her Dad, Robert
\nand Mum, Emma and sister, Indie in Dubai. Isabel is the grand-daughter of
\nparishioners Michael and Grace Lynam.\u00a0We remember Isabel, her parents,
\nsister, grandparents and godparents in our prayers.<\/p>\n

Select Vestry meeting<\/strong>
\nA meeting of the Select Vestry will be held at 7.30pm in the Church Hall on
\nTuesday 10th September.<\/p>\n

Food for Thought by Canon Patrick Lawrence<\/strong><\/p>\n

I write on August\u00a06th, the Feast of the Transfiguration, which happens to mark
\nthe 79th \u00a0anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I
\nhappened, by chance, to see last week, part of a B.B.C. 2 Television
\ndocumentary about these events.<\/p>\n

Born just six years after these events, I\u00a0am
\nshocked both by the horrific consequences of the bombings, then and
\nafterwards, but even more so by the fact that in my \u2018growing up\u2019 years little was
\nspoken about that day, August 6th, 1945.<\/p>\n

It is so easy for a country, a continent or a world leading power to slip into war.
\nThe Book Genesis in its first chapters tells of the first \u2018war\u2019 between Cain and
\nAbel; the alienation of a nation through the exclusion\u00a0of Esau from the home of
\nhis brother Jacob and father Isaac.\u00a0Today, in those same countries of the \u2018Near\u2019
\nEast, the beginnings of wars and the threat of a more universal fight among and
\nbetween nations was never more serious since 1945- with the possible exception
\nof the Cuban Crisis of the 1960s.<\/p>\n

Mr. Elon Musk,\u00a0multi-billion dollar entrepreneur and now aspiring \u2018prophet\u2019
\ndeclared in the past few days that \u2018Civil War is inevitable\u2019.<\/p>\n

Regarding
\ndiscipleship, Jesus declared \u2018I came not to bring peace but a sword.\u2019[Matthew
\n10: 34].This teaching was not prescriptive: it was consequential, taking into
\naccount both the personal demands of discipleship – many of which were going
\nto be contrary to human desires, and\u00a0the divisive nature of humanity at
\nlarge.<\/p>\n

Civil war is not inevitable in 2024, nor is a general conflagration of the
\nnations.
\nFollowers of Jesus Christ have an obligation to speak peace by word and by
\ndeed.\u00a0 Canon P.Lawrence<\/p>\n
