Issue 160 “UNION NEWS” July 2023
Dear Parishioners,
Summer
For many of us the months of July and August provide the opportunity
for rest, relaxation and leisure. However, I am also very mindful that
those working in the essential human services and in farming and retail
will continue to be busy due to the nature of the work. The schools in
the Parish have now begun their summer holidays and we wish the
teachers, staff and pupils a happy and relaxing summer. In the Parish
there will still be some activities which I hope parishioners will enjoy.
The Fleadh Cheoil
This year the Fleadh will be held from Sunday 6 th August – Monday 14 th
August. Everyone who attended the Fleadh last yearwill know how
enjoyable it was and we sincerely hope the good weather will hold
again this year. We wish the organisers and all the participants a very
successful Fleadh. All Saints’ Church will be open every afternoon
from 2.00pm – 5.00pm to welcome visitors who have come to
Mullingar for the Fleadh. In order for this to happen we will require
two parishioners each day to be available to greet the visitors in the
church. I am making a special appeal to everyone in the Parish if at all
possible to help with this important volunteering role. It would be very
disappointing if we could not open the church on certain days due to the
fact that we have no volunteers. May I ask you to please contact Arthur
O’Toole (087-9733233) as soon as possible if you are available to help.
Children’s Bible Camp
The Children’s Bible Camp for children aged between 7-13 years will
be held in All Saints’ on Monday 31 st July and Tuesday 1 st and
Wednesday 2 nd August from 9.30a.m. each morning until 1.00p.m. The
camp will be led by Luke and Esther Hawkins and will be a really
enjoyable occasion for the children. The Camp is not confined solely to
children from the Parish so if children in the Parish would like their
friends to come with them they will be most welcome indeed. I would
be very grateful if you would confirm your attendance by either
contacting Arthur O’Toole O’Toole (087-9733233) or myself (087-
7870985) to make a booking. There will be no charge for the Camp.
Holy Baptisms and Weddings
Over the summer there will be a number of baptisms and weddings in
the Parish and we hope these important occasions will be very special
and enjoyable.
Summer Madness
The Christian Rock Festival for young people will be held from Friday
30 th June to Tuesday 4 th July in Portglenone, Co. Antrim. This will be a
very special occasion for the young people and it is wonderful that this
year sixteen young parishioners will be attending from the Parish.
Select Vestry
A meeting of the Select Vestry will be take place on Tuesday evening
18 th July at 7.30p.m. in All Saints’.
All Saints’ School
We had a lovely End of year Service for the pupils of All Saints’ School
on Sunday 18 th June. It was lovely to see so many people attend the
Service and we wish all the young people of 6 th Class the very best as
they move on to secondary education in September.
Holy Days in July
3 rd July St. Thomas
22 nd July Mary Magdalene
25 th July St. James
On each day there will be a Service of Holy Communion in All Saints’
at 11.00 a.m.
Bereavements
Margaret McCormack passed away peacefully on Friday 2 nd June and
we offer our deepest sympathy to her children Emily, David and Laura,
and Margaret’s sister Mary, and the other members of the family.
Margaret was deeply loved and admired in the Parish. She was a
person of immense faith and a truly lovely person. She bore her illness
over the last few years with both courage and dignity and we were all so
sad at her passing. We pray that Margaret will now rest in peace and
rise in glory and that her family will be comforted by their lovely
memories of her and their faith in God.
Mrs. Alexandra McDougal passed away peacefully on Sunday evening,
4 th June. In May she had celebrated her 100 th birthday and the whole
Parish was sad to hear of her passing. We offer our deepest sympathy
to her daughter Angela, son Ewen and of course Angela and David’s
children and her grandchildren, Kenneth, John, Lynne, Jenny and
Niamh and her great-grandchildren. Mrs. McDougal and her husband
Canon Ian lived in the Rectory when Ian was Rector of the Parish.
They arrived in 1958 and their ministry is still warmly remembered.
She was a true delight to be with and we will all miss her so very much
indeed. Her humour and lucidity remained with her until she died.
May she rest in peace and rise in glory. She has left a treasury of
wonderful memories for Angela and the family.
We also offer our deepest sympathy to Vivienne Mulligan on the very
sad death of her dear brother Ivan. His death has very naturally brought
a great sadness to the family, particularly for his mother and father
Mabel and Finian and of course Vivienne, but also the other family
members. We pray that they will be comforted in their sorrow by their
loving memories of Ivan and in knowing that God’s promises are true
and that death is not an end but an entrance into God’s fuller presence.
May Ivan rest in peace and rise in glory.
As I have written in previous Union Notes I am always available if
anyone in the Parish needs to contact me.
With God’s blessings,
Revd. Alastair Graham Mobile: 087-787 0985
