Issue 157 “UNION NEWS” April 2023

Dear Parishioners,
Palm Sunday and Holy Week
 Palm Sunday
This year we again have a poignant opportunity to remember the events of Holy Week and to celebrate the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. On Palm Sunday 2 nd April, at 11.00 a.m. in All Saints’ Church, there will be an inspiring Lenten Songs of Praise led by the Senior Parish Choir under the direction of Bill McConnell, our choir director, and the Mullingar Allsorts Children’s Choir, under the direction of Diane Ashmore. The children from 5 th and 6 th Class will also present their Lenten Project.

 Blessing of Palms
Again this year Harry and Barbara Haskins have very kindly donated the Palm
Crosses, which will be blessed in All Saints’ on Palm Sunday and distributed to

Pornography Technology and Children –

Mr. Richard Hogan a distinguished psychotherapist in Dublin will be giving a lecture on the impact of pornography on children and teenagers. Every one is invited to attend.

 Good Friday – Sacred Words and Sacred Music at 8p.m.
At 8.00 p.m. in All Saints’ this very moving Service will be held. This year the musicwill be sung by the Senior Parish Choir and the Lynn Singers and the sacred words of the Passion will be read. I warmly commend this occasion to you.

 Easter Sunday
On Easter Sunday there will be the usual special Services –
All Saints’ 9.15 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. in,
Almoritia 10.00 a.m.
Killucan.11.30 a.m.

Lighten Our Darkness
The Lighten Our Darkness project continues to go very well. On the weekend after Easter, 14 th – 16 th April, the young leaders have been invited to make their presentation at the Corrymeela Reconciliation Centre, Ballycastle, North Antrim.

Easter General Vestry
The Easter General Vestry will be held on Sunday 23 rd April at 11.00 a.m. in All
Saints’ beginning with a short Service followed by the Easter Vestry meeting. This format seems to both suit and be agreeable to parishioners. With all the demands on people’s time these days, the conventional holding of the meeting in the evening is not as suitable as it once was.

Mayfair Saturday 20 th May
This year our annual Mayfair will be held on Saturday 20 th May at All Saints’ Church from 10.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. There will be the usual stalls –Plants, Cakes, Tombola, Refreshments, Children’s Baking Competition, Raffle. Again  year we hope that the Mayfair will be very well supported. Emma Coburn and the stallholders will be looking for support from parishioners over the coming weeks.

Anne Purdon who had been a longstanding parishioner in Killucan has passed awayand we offer our deepest sympathy to her family and daughters – Amanda, Juliet, Sue and Alice. In recent years Anne had been residing in a nursing home in Dublin which was near her family. We are saddened at her  passing and remember with great affection her amazing contribution to the Parish. Her faithfulness and friendliness were both so distinctive and were so deeply appreciated. She was both loyal and generous to Killucan and will be very sadly missed. A Service of Thanksgiving will be held on Sunday 14 th May  at 3.00 p.m. in St. Etchen’s Church. To which everyone is invited.

We offer our deepest sympathy to Christopher and Monalisa Manzira following thedeath of Christopher’s father, Josethat Chakanyuka, who passed away following a short illness in Zimbabwe. Christopher’s father, who had been Principal of a National School and was a leader of church music, was very highly respected and admired.

We offer our deepest sympathy to Miriam (Blennerhasset) and Philip Gray following the death of Philip’s mother, Mary. Mary was very well known in Mullingar and was greatly loved and admired by her family and friends, and so respected in the wider community. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Denis, who was also so very well known and respected. Her funeral took place in Mullingar Cathedral.

To each of these families we offer our deepest sympathy and pray that they will be comforted by their loving memories of their loved ones who, we now pray, are in the fuller presence of God, where they may rest in peace and rise in glory.

Decoration of Church for Easter
The Easter decoration of the churches will take place on Saturday 8 th April

Bible Study
The Bible Study held on Sunday 26 th March went very well indeed and it was agreedto hold the next bible study on Sunday 23 rd April at 4.00 p.m. in All Saints’. I warmly commend bible study to parishioners and invite you to join us for the next meeting. – on Sunday 23 rd April at 4p.m. in All Saints’.

Olive and I would like to wish you all a very happy and holy Easter. Wherever you may be celebrating Easter this year we hope it will be a very joyful time for you.
If you are staying home at Easter it would be lovely to wish you a very happy Easter at the Church Services. This year we hope there will be a large number of parishioners attending church.

With kind regards and with God’s blessings,
Revd. Alastair Graham
