Issue 152 Union Notes November 2022

Dear Parishioners,

All Saints’ Day

This year All Saints’ Day falls on Tuesday 1st November.  To celebrate All Saints’ Day we will have a Service of Holy Communion at 11.00 a.m. and hopefully we will be able to sing hymns if enough parishioners can attend.  After the Service we will have some light refreshments to mark this very special day in the Parish.  I warmly invite parishioners to come to church on All Saints’ Day when we can truly give thanks to God for all the encouraging events that are happening in the Parish.

Confirmation

On Sunday 6th November at 11.00 a.m. ten young candidates from the Parish will make their Confirmation in All Saints’ Church.  This is a very special day for the young candidates and their families and I hope that parishioners will come along to both show and to give them your warm support.  It is lovely to see so many young people involved in the Parish and the support of more mature parishioners is so important to give them encouragement in their Christian life.  We very much look forward to welcoming Bishop Storey who will preach at the Confirmation.

Remembrance Sunday – Sunday 13th November

The annual Service of Remembrance will be held in All Saints’ on Sunday 13th November at 11.00 a.m.  This is an important occasion to remember those who bravely suffered and gave their lives to secure our freedom from oppression and coercion.  This year the Remembrance Service is particularly poignant as we remember those who are suffering as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.  At the Remembrance Service we will also pray for peace and an end to war.

Christmas Tree Appeal

The young leaders in Lighten Our Darkness by Numbers will launch the Christmas Tree Appeal on Advent Sunday, 27th November at 10.00 a.m. in All Saints’, and at 11.30 a.m. in Killucan.  The Christmas Tree Appeal is an invitation to parishioners to adopt a tree as a Christmas present to help repair the damage that is being done to God’s natural world.  The young leaders will plant the trees and, if parishioners do not have a space in which to plant the tree, an alternative spot will be found in the Parish.  The Christmas Tree Appeal is a practical way to show your support to help climate change.  I really hope that parishioners will come to church on Advent Sunday to show their support by their presence for the work that the young leaders are undertaking.

Advent Ecumenical Carol Service

The Advent Ecumenical Carol Service will take place on Sunday 27th November at 7.00 p.m. in All Saints’ church.  The Carol Service takes place in candlelight and is a wonderful opportunity for us to join together with other Christians in Mullingar at the beginning of the Christian year to show our commitment to faith and to God’s love.

Select Vestry

The Select Vestry will meet in All Saints’ on Monday 14th November at 7.30 p.m.

Harvest Extravaganza

The Harvest Extravaganza was a truly outstanding success.  The displays in the church were nothing short of magnificent and the produce was simply delicious.  It was so lovely to see so many parishioners supporting the Harvest Extravaganza and the two Harvest Festival Services were attended by large congregations.  I know I speak for everyone in the Parish when I express our sincere thanks and gratitude to Emma Coburn and all her wonderful helpers who made this a truly memorable occasion.

Symposium

The Youth Symposium which was held on Friday 7th October was a huge success.  100 young people attended and the talks given by the Archbishop of Armagh, Most Revd. John McDowell, and Professor Katy Hayward of Queen’s University, were outstanding.  It was also lovely to see some dignatories from Mullingar attend as well.

Frank Milling

We warmly congratulate Mr. Frank Milling on his appointment as Warden of Wilson’s Hospital School.  Mr. Milling has a distinguished background in teaching and, under his leadership, Wilson’s Hospital School looks forward to an exciting future.  Mr. Milling comes from Co. Cavan and is a prominent member of the Church of Ireland.

Bereavement

We offer our deepest sympathy to Charlotte and Peter Molloy following the sudden and untimely death of Charlotte’s mother in Newtownmountkennedy.  Charlotte’s mum was a truly outstanding person who had won the admiration and affection of everyone in the family and the community of Co. Wicklow.  Charlotte and Peter provided her with amazing support and we hope at this sad time for them that they will be comforted by their wonderful memories of Charlotte’s mum.  We pray that she, in the presence of God, may rest in peace and rise in glory.

Canon Lawrence

Canon Lawrence will be on duty from 16th – 25th November for any pastoral emergencies.  Canon Lawrence will also take the church services on Sunday 20th November.  Olive and I will be attending a family event in the United States.

With God’s blessings,
