Issue 57 "UNION NEWS" November 2014
November - A Special Time in the Parish
This year the month of November promises to be a very special time in the history of the Parish.
There are a number of special events which I hope parishioners will enjoy supporting and
All Saints' Bi-Centenary Service Sunday 2nd November 11.30 a.m.
Special Preacher: Archbishop Lord Robin Eames, former Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All
Ireland. After the Service the Archbishop will bless and dedicate the new Garden of Remembrance
in the Churchyard followed by lunch in the Greville Arms Hotel.
Remembrance Sunday - Sunday 9th November 11.30 a.m. in All Saints' Church
A special Service of Remembrance to mark the centenary of the First World War. The special
preacher will be Bishop Richard Henderson and ex-Servicemen and women will be on parade.
Parish Dinner - Friday 14th November at 8.00 p.m. in the Greville Arms Hotel
This is the third Parish Dinner and it is a wonderful opportunity for parishioners to meet socially.
The Dinner is modestly priced at €20.
Boys' Brigade and Girls' Association Enrolment Service
All Saint's Church Sunday 16th November at 11.00 a.m.
This is a very important occasion for us to support the young people and their leaders in the Parish.
I hope this Service will be very well attended by parishioners.
Mullingar Flower Festival Friday 21st - Sunday 23rd November
To mark the Bi-Centenary in a very special way the Parish is holding a Flower Festival in aid of the
North Westmeath Hospice who provide such an invaluable service. We hope to raise over €10,000
and all proceeds will be given to the Hospice, so please do support this event and encourage your
friends and neighbours to come along. The 5000 flowers arranged in Christmas Carols will be a
magnificent spectacle. The Flower Festival concludes with a Songs of Praise at 7.00 p.m. on Sunday
23rd and this Service will be conducted by the Very Rev. Bill McMillan, the world-renowned flower
arranger. At the Flower Festival there will be two Floral Demonstrations in the Greville Arms Hotel
on Saturday and Sunday at 2.30 p.m.
Candlelit Advent Carol Service
This beautiful Carol Service will be held on Advent Sunday, 30th November at 7.00 p.m. in All
Saints' Church. At the beginning of a new church year we sing the much-loved Advent Carols and,
like last year, this will be an ecumenical occasion and we will be joined by the clergy and
parishioners of the other Churches in the Mullingar area.
November promises to be a very special time with the holding of all these uplifting occasions.
I would like to thank everyone who helped make each of the Services in the four churches so
memorable and so uplifting. Each church was beautifully decorated and I would like to also like to
thank all those who took part in the Services. We would also like to thank our special preachers
whose sermons will be long remembered.
There will be a meeting of the Select Vestry on Monday 3rd November at 8.00 p.m. in the Rectory.
All Saints' School Parents Council
The AGM will be held in All Saints' Parish Hall on Thursday 6th November at 7.00 p.m.
The November Whist Drive will be held in All Saints' Parish Hall at 8.30 p.m. on Friday 7th
November. Everyone is warmly invited to attend this most enjoyable evening. The Christmas Whist
Drive will be held on Friday 5th December in All Saints'.
Road Safety Annual Commemoration
This year the Service to remember those who have sadly died in road traffic accidents, and their
families, will be held in the Bloomfield House Hotel on Sunday 16th November at 2.00 p.m.
We would like to warmly congratulate Duncan and Michelle Maclean who were married in Killucan
last month. We wish them every happiness and good health for their married life together.
We offer our deepest sympathy to Lilian Hampton, Grace and Mick Lynam, and Andrea and John
Hampton-Mulvaney. Lillian's and Grace's mother, and Andrea's grandmother, Mary Anne
O'Halloran, passed away peacefully on 18th October and her funeral service was held in Tallaght
Parish Church on Wednesday 22nd October. Mrs. O'Halloran was a woman of inspiring faith and
deep Christian compassion. Her influence for good among her family, friends and wider
community, was incalculable. She will be very sadly missed but her wonderful life will be
remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. We pray that now, in the fuller
presence of God, she may rest in peace. We pray that her nine children, grandchildren, brother,
sister and all members of the wider family will be comforted by knowing God's promises are true
and by the loving care and support of their family and friends.
All Saints' Day - Saturday 1st November
There will be a Service of Holy Communion to celebrate All Saints' Day on Saturday 1st November
at 10.00 a.m. in All Saints' Church. Following the Service a working party will meet to tidy up the
church grounds before the Bi-Centenary celebrations next Sunday. Everyone will be most welcome
to come and help with the work.
Parish Gift Day
On Sunday 30th November, Advent Sunday, we will have our Parish Gift Day which we have had for
the last number of years. The Parish Gift Day gives all of us in the Parish an opportunity to show
our appreciation for all that we have as a Parish and to support the good work that is being
undertaken. A Gift Day envelope will be sent to everyone and I would like to thank you in
anticipation for the gift that you may give.
Parish Web Address
You may like to keep in touch with the Parish through the website and your family and friends may
also like to have the web address. The address is www.mullingarunionofparishes.net.
