Comprising of All Saints Mullingar - Killucan - Kilbixy & Almoritia
MULLINGAR UNION OF PARISHES
Issue 455 "UNION NEWS" November 2013
The new Bishop of Meath and Kildare, Rev. Pat Storey, will be consecrated Bishop on 30th
November in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. We look forward to welcoming the Bishop to our
Parish in due course and I know her consecration will be a wonderful occasion for the Church. We
will continue to remember her in our prayers.
The Rector of St. George's Parish in Maplewood in USA has invited me to preach on Advent Sunday
in his Parish and to take part in the Advent ceremonies. St. George's is a very vibrant Parish and I
feel very privileged to have been invited to preach. The invitation came prior to the election of the
Bishop and so, regretfully, I will not be able to attend the Consecration on 30th November. I have
written to the Bishop Elect and conveyed my apologies.
The Messy Church in All Saints' on 20th October was a wonderful success. A huge number of
children and parents attended. We are going to continue Messy Church once a month and I hope it
will be very well supported. It is clearly a very effective way of making children aware of the
Christian faith and its' values. I also intend to develop a similar initiative in Killucan where we
have a large number of children.
Parish Youth Forum
I am delighted to announce that Alison Jones, who until recently was the Diocesan Youth Officer,
has agreed to work in the Parish on developing a program for young people over 13 years of age.
Alison will hold a workshop on Saturday 9th November at 4.30 p.m. in All Saints' Parish Hall. I
warmly invite all young people aged 13 and over to attend the workshop as Alison wants to discuss
how best this new Youth Program can be developed.
I find it very encouraging that the Parish is so supportive of the development of our Children and
Youth Ministry and I am sure the initiatives we are undertaking will be of benefit to all the young
All Saints' Whist Drive for November will be held on Friday 1st November at 8.00 p.m. in the Parish
Hall. The Christmas Whist Drive will be held on Friday 6th December at 8.00 p.m. Everyone is
warmly invited to attend.
All Saints' Day
This year All Saints' Day falls on Friday 1st November and there will be a Service of Holy
Communion at 12.30 p.m. in All Saints' Church. I do hope a large number of parishioners will be
able to attend.
Parish Dinner and Dance
Last year this occasion was a huge success and very much enjoyed by all who attended. This
year's Parish Dinner will be held on Friday 15th November at 8.00 p.m. in The Greville Arms Hotel.
The tickets are modestly priced at €20. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to meet together for
a very friendly and enjoyable occasion. I sincerely ask all parishioners to consider supporting the
Dinner and I can assure you that you will have a most enjoyable evening.
Parish Gift Day
The Parish Gift Day will be held on Advent Sunday 1st December. Gift Day provides an opportunity
for everyone to support the work we are undertaking in the Parish and every contribution, no
matter how small, will be greatly appreciated. May I encourage parishioners to take up the
Envelope Scheme as through this Scheme the Parish can benefit from a tax rebate from the
government. I wish to assure all parishioners that the Honorary Treasurer is the only person who
deals, confidentially, with parishoners contributions.
Each year in all churches the traditional Service of Remembrance is observed. It is so important
that we do not forget those who gave their lives and suffered for our freedom and I urge
parishioners to attend the Services held on Remembrance Sunday.
The Parish Choir, under the direction of Bill McConnell, has greatly enhanced our worship in
church, and enriched the special church Services held during the year. I am sure there are many
people who would like to support the Choir with their singing but may be tentative about coming
forward. Bill would love people to come to speak to him. It is not necessary to be able to read
music in order to be in the Choir and every effort is made to be flexible in the holding of Choir
practices. Please do not hesitate to let Bill or myself know if you would like to be involved in the
Choir. We look forward to hearing from you.
Christmas Carol Concert
The Christmas Carol Concert with the Mullingar Musical Allsorts Children's Choir and the Midland
Youth Orchestra will be held on Saturday 7th December at 7.30 p.m. in All Saints. This is a
wonderful occasion not to be missed and I hope you will mark it in your diary and join us at the
Plant and Cake Sale 2014
Next year's Sale will be held on Saturday 17th May in All Saints' Parish Hall.
Select Vestry meeting will be held in the Rectory on Monday 18th November at 8pm.
We welcomed into God's family Holly Emily Mitchell who was baptised in Killucan Church on
Sunday 6th October. We remember Holly, her parents and godparents, in our prayers.
Two long-established parishioners in All Saints' Mullingar died recently. Mrs. Kay Hill had spent a
number of years in a nursing home in the town, having lived a very active and vibrant life. Kay was
a wonderful Christian and her faith inspired each of her children, who are all actively involved in
their respective church communities. We offer our deepest sympathy to Gary and Eileen, who live
in Mullingar and to all the other members of the family. Mrs. Hill reached the wonderful age of 95
and the care and love that the family surrounded her with over all the years was truly wonderful.
We were also saddened by the passing of Frances Neale who had been a very longstanding and
much loved member of All Saints' and had recently celebrated her 90th birthday. Up until relatively
recently she was still attending church and going to the Whist Drives, and was widely loved by
everyone. We offer our deepest sympathy to Arthur and Robbie who live in Mullingar and to her
daughters Betty and Violet who reside in the UK. Frances's family gave her a huge amount of
loving support as she was, of course, a very special person in their lives.
We pray that both Kay and Frances, now in the fuller presence of God, may rest in peace.
Rev. Jean Wynne
The Rev. Jean Wynne will be on duty for emergency calls at 086-3564590 while I am way preaching
in the USA at the end of November and beginning of December.
With God's blessings,
Rev. Alastair Graham, Rector
