Comprising of All Saints Mullingar - Killucan - Kilbixy & Almoritia
MULLINGAR UNION OF PARISHES
Issue 75 "UNION NEWS" May 2016
There are a number of special and important events in the Parish this month which I hope
will be enjoyed and well supported.
Ascension Day - Thursday 5th May
On Thursday 5th May, Ascension Day, I will be giving a special Talk in All Saints' at 8.00 p.m. on
"Believing in God". Faith and belief in God is at the very heart of Christianity and in this talk I want
to show how believing in God is still something we should all aspire to in modern Ireland. Everyone
will be most welcome.
The ceremonies on 10th April to celebrate Watson's 70 years of service on the Select Vestry were
truly memorable. The huge attendance at the church service and the lunch afterwards is a measure
of the admiration and affection everyone has for Watson and the valuable contribution he has
made. His commitment to God, grounded in his ecumenism, coupled with his amazing contribution
to the community, was warmly acknowledged. We are so pleased that he is still going to continue
his service which has delighted everyone. you can see more HERE
Christian Voices Together
A special public lecture will be held in All Saints' church on Sunday 8th May at 8.00 p.m. The
speaker will be Professor Gordon Graham, of Princeton in New Jersey, who will speak on "How to
be Christian in a secular culture". You may remember that Gordon gave a very inspiring talk on a
previous visit and I warmly invite you to this lecture as I know you will find it very interesting
indeed. As we are building our Christian witness in Mullingar, we will find Gordon's experience in
North America very informative. This is an ecumenical occasion and we hope to be joined by
members of all the other churches in the Mullingar area.
Boys' Brigade and Girls' Association
The Closing Session will be held on Tuesday 17th May at 7.00 p.m. This is an occasion to which we
warmly invite the parents of the young people and parishioners to attend, where there is an
opportunity to see the good work the Company undertakes with the children. I hope it will be very
well supported again this year.
Parish Sale of Work - Saturday 21st May
The annual Sale of delicious cakes and superb plants will be held in All Saints' on Saturday 21st
May from 11.00 a.m. - 2.00 p.m. Each year there are wonderful bargains and the quality of the
produce is always excellent. This year the Sale will be expanding to include other stalls and
activities. It is a great opportunity for us all to come together as a Parish. Raffle tickets are
included in the Union Notes this month and your support will be very much appreciated.
Confirmation - Sunday 29th May
The Confirmation Service will be held on Sunday 29th May at 11.00 a.m. in All Saints'. This is an
occasion when we invite the parishioners of all the churches to come along to support the young
candidates. I would like to invite you to remember the candidates in your prayers as they prepare
for this very important day in their lives - Emily Ashmore, Niall Murray, Lewis Butler, Judith Uyi,
Emily Ray, Silver Chukwuemeka
Rectory Lunch - Sunday 12th June
Olive and I would like to invite parishioners to Lunch after church on Sunday 12th June at 12.30
p.m. We do hope you will be able to attend and during the month of May we will be giving
parishioners the opportunity to confirm their attendance.
A special Concert to raise money for a local charity will be held on Saturday 18th June at 8.00 p.m.
in All Saints'. The Concert will be given by the Dublin Airport Choir and we very much look forward
to their visit. Further details will be circulated in due course.

The Church of Ireland General Synod will be held from 12th - 14th May. I will be attending as a
member of the Synod. This year one of the important items is the decision to be taken on Diocesan
boundaries. I would warmly invite you to remember in prayer the church as it prepares to gather for
this important annual event.
The monthly Bible Study will be held in Killucan on Saturday 7th May at 10.30 a.m.

places of interest. The first outing will be held on a Saturday in June 25th a day trip to dublin to the
National Botanical Gardens and Glasnevin Museum and the organiser of the outings will be Brigid
Geoghegan. These outings will provide an opportunity for enjoyment and good company and if you
would like to book your place on the bus, could you please contact Brigid on 087-6157052. I really
hope this initiative will be very well supported and again it provides an opportunity for the Parish

The Confirmation will be held on Sunday 29th May in All Saints' church. I hope you will remember
all the young people who will be confirmed in your prayers as they prepare for this important
occasion in their lives.
We congratulate Charlotte Cooke who was recently welcomed into God's family through baptism is
All Saints'. We pray for her and her parents and godparents.
We pray for the families who have recently been bereaved. We offer our deepest sympathy to Erin
and Ben van der Poll following the untimely death of Erin's mother Breeda. Breeda had borne her
long illness with astonishing courage and dignity. Her passing has been greatly mourned by her
very loving family and by her grandchildren who were devoted to her. We pray that she, now in the
fuller presence of God, may rest in peace.
We also pray for the family of Eric Fagan. Eric, who was originally from Dublin, moved to Mullingar
some years ago and passed away very suddenly in his home at Lynn. We remember Nicola, Andrea
and Eric and the other members of his family at this very sad time for them. We pray that he may
rest in peace.
We offer our deepest sympathy to the Williams family following the death of Eric. Eric had moved
here from England after his retirement and after a short illness sadly passed away. We pray that
his family will be comforted by their loving memories of him and that he may rest in peace.
