Issue 35
5 "UNION NEWS" January 2013

Dear Parishioners,

I would like to wish you good health and happiness for 2013. I do hope you had an enjoyable and restful Christmas and certainly we had a lovely time at the Christmas celebrations in the Parish. I would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to make all the services so special. It was wonderful to meet so many parishioners at church over Christmas.

This year Epiphany falls on Sunday 6th January. Epiphany is a very important festival for the Christian church and draws the Christmas season to a close. This year we will celebrate Epiphany as a Parish family and there will be a special service for all parishioners in All Saints' at 11.00 a.m. on Sunday 6th January. We will then hold an Epiphany Candlelit Carol Service in Killucan at 7.00 p.m. I do hope both these services will be very well attended. This year in the Parish we hope to build up the life of our Parish family and Epiphany provides an ideal opportunity to begin.

Christian Unity Week
The week of prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated each January and this year there will be two special occasions. On Sunday evening 20th January the Parish choirs in Mullingar are coming together for a special concert entitled "Harmony in Song". The concert will be held in St. Paul's church at 7.00 p.m. and this is an occasion I know we will all thoroughly enjoy. On the following Sunday, 27th January, at 8.00 p.m. a public lecture will be given in All Saints' by Robert Enright, the Director of the Forgiveness Institute in Wisconsin USA. Robert is an international speaker on Forgiveness. I do hope parishioners will show their support by attending the lecture.

Electoral College
The Electoral College to elect the new Bishop will be held on Monday 28th January in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin and will be chaired by the Archbishop of Dublin. I will be attending the College as one of the electors and I would ask you all to remember the electors as they prepare for this important occasion.

Presentation to Archbishop Richard Clarke
A Diocesan presentation to our former Bishop will be held on Friday 18th January at 7.30 p.m. in the Mullingar Park Hotel.

Select Vestry
The Select Vestry will meet on Monday 14th January at 8.00 p.m. in the Rectory.

We welcomed into God's family through baptism Thomas Denniston on Sunday 9th December. We remember him in our prayers as he begins his journey of faith and we continue to pray for his parents and godparents.

Kilbixy church reopened for public worship on Sunday 9th December. Everyone has been truly impressed with the work of restoration and a special Service of Thanksgiving will be held in the first half of 2013.

Services at Kilbixy and Almoritia
Sunday services will be held in Kilbixy on the first, third, fourth and fifth Sundays of the month. On the second Sunday of each month, the service will be held in Almoritia. The time of the service will be 11.30 a.m. each Sunday.

Killucan Bi-Centenary
This year Killucan Parish will celebrate its' Bi-Centenary and a number of events will be held. A special meeting for all parishioners to finalise the arrangements will be held on Monday 7th January at 8.00 p.m. in Killucan church.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Augustin and Rita Uyi following the unexpected death of Rita's father after a short illness in Nigeria. We particularly feel for them at this time being so far from home and we pray that Rita's father will rest in peace and that she will feel comforted by the love and support of her friends and of course our support in the parish.

We also extend our sincere sympathy to David and Pamela Webster on the death of David's Aunt and Godmother who died after a period of ill health. We pray that Vera is now at rest in the fuller presence of God and that David and Pamela will be comforted by the love and support of their family and friends.

I very much look forward to working with you again this year in the parish. Our community will benefit from a strong Christian witness and voice and I hope we will do all we can to ensure that our parish remains vibrant and responsive to the needs of people.

With God's blessings,
Rev. Alastair Graham, Rector
