MULLINGAR UNION OF PARISHES
Issue 60 "UNION NEWS" February 2015

Dear Parishioner(s)

Christian Family Gathering Church Services
Over the next few months I hope to hold a 'Family Gathering' Service in each church. As we know, at baptism we become members of God's family and a brother and sister in Christ to everyone in the Parish. We know in our own family how special family gatherings are both important and enjoyable. Indeed, we often lament when we don't meet as families as often as we would like. These special family Parish gatherings will give everyone an opportunity to meet and I will be sending a special invitation to all the young people who have been baptised in the different churches in recent years. I hope each Service will be very well attended. The first Parish Family Gathering Service will be in All Saints' on Sunday 15th February at 11.00 a.m. and I will be inviting the Confirmation candidates to help lead the Service.

Ash Wednesday and Lent
Ash Wednesday this year falls on Wednesday 18th February and there will be a Service held in each church:
10.30 a.m. Killucan Holy Communion
12.00 noon All Saints' School Service
12.45 p.m. All Saints' Holy Communion
5.00 p.m. Almoritia Holy Communion
7.30 p.m. Kilbixy Holy Communion

Lenten Bible Study
I will be conducting the Lenten Bible Study during Lent in Killucan church at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday 21stand 28th February, and Saturday 7th, 14th and 21st March.

Lenten Weekly Service
There will be a Service of Holy Communion each Wednesday during Lent in All Saints' Church at 12.45 p.m.

Lent provides the opportunity for prayer, reflection and Bible study and I warmly invite you to join me for the Bible Study and weekly Service during Lent.

Candlemas
Candlemas is a very ancient tradition in the church and on Sunday 8th February, at 5.00 p.m., there will be a special Children's Service in Killucan to celebrate Candlemas. Following the Service tea and refreshments will be served.

Whist Drive
The next All Saints' Whist Drive will be held on Friday 6th February at
8.30 p.m. in All Saints' Parish Hal
l.

The churches in the Mullingar area are organising this very successful program which will start on 20th February and anyone who is interested should contact jobnetmullingarinfo@gmail.com The interviews will be held on Thursday 5th February and the course will be held in the Greville Arms Hotel.

Holy Baptisms
Over the next few weeks there will be a number of baptisms in the Parish and I would ask you to remember those children and their families who are preparing for baptism.

Youth Club
The Parish Youth Club will hold its' next meeting on Sunday 1st February from 6.00 - 8.00 p.m. in All Saints' Parish Hall.

Trim Cathedral Youth Prayer Service
The Church of Ireland is having a special Day of Prayer for young people and a Service of Prayer will be held in Trim Cathedral on Tuesday 17th February at 7.30 p.m. Everyone is invited.

All Saints'
In recent weeks a number of items have been left behind in the church and are currently on the coat stand at the door of the church. If you would like to retrieve items of clothing or umbrellas please call to the church. Those that are not claimed will be brought to one of the Charity shops in the town.

Churchwardens' Wands
Doreen Lynch and Harry Haskins have very kindly presented the Parish with a set of churchwardens' ceremonial wands which are used at special liturgical occasions in the church. This is a most generous gift and we thank them very much indeed. They have graciously said that these wands may be used in any of the churches in the Union when required.

Children's Gift Day
The Children's Gift Day was held on Sunday 11th January and I would like to thank all the children and their families for their support. I am so pleased to announce that €300 has been sent to the school in Kenya for stationery - pens, pencils and notebooks. The Principal of the school is absolutely delighted as the school is facing a number of financial shortages. I do hope this Gift Day will continue to be a very important occasion in the Parish and will certainly be celebrated next year at Epiphany.

Parish Survey
The Parish Survey will be published in a Report next month and the Select Vestry intend to hold the launch of the Report on Sunday morning 8th March at 11.00 a.m. in All Saints' church. I do hope large numbers of parishioners will be able to attend. The findings of the Survey will significantly inform the decisions on the development of the future of the Parish.

Bereavements
We offer our deepest sympathy to Frank and Jean Kilmartin following the passing of Frank's sister Phyllis, who died peacefully after a period of infirmity. Phyllis spent her married life living just outside Ballynacargy and was greatly loved and admired by everyone in the community. In offering our deepest sympathy to Frank, Jean and their family, we pray that Phyllis, now in the fuller presence of God, may rest in peace.

We also offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the late Doreen Gibson-Brabazon who passed away very peacefully in Newbrook Nursing Home on Saturday 17th January. Doreen moved to live in Westmeath following her marriage to her beloved Joe in 1944, and, over the next 71 years, won the admiration and affection of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was buried at Stone Hall following a Service in Almoritia, a church she loved and worshipped in so regularly. We extend our deepest sympathy to all her children, David, Rosemary, Sheila, George, Nicola, Jill, John and Ruth, her 23 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We pray that Doreen, now in the fuller presence of God, may rest in peace and that the family will be comforted by the love and support of their family and friends, and in knowing that Doreen had a very deep faith and, while she is now out of our sight, we know she is in God's sure keeping.
