5 "UNION NEWS" February 2014
Dear Parishioners,

Bishop's Visit
The visit of the Bishop of Meath on Sunday 19th January was a very special occasion and gave us the opportunity to warmly welcome the Bishop and her husband to the Diocese. I would like to thank everyone who helped make the Service, and reception afterwards, so successful and we will look forward to future visits by the Bishop.

Spring Parish Survey
Spring commences at the beginning of February and is a time of growth and promise in Nature. The hope and growth that accompanies the season of Spring will hopefully extend to the life of our Parish and encourage more parishioners to attend church Services. At the moment, just 17% of those who receive the Union Notes in the Parish come to church on Sunday. I once passed a church in America that had a striking notice "Closed due to lack of interest". Most parishioners would be very upset if a similar notice was placed outside All Saints', Almoritia, Kilbixy and Killucan. Every effort is being made to make the worship of God both relevant and inspiring. It would be lovely if 2014 saw an increase in attendance and I extend a very warm invitation to everyone to come to church. The Select Vestry has received a grant to enable it to undertake a survey of parishioners. This will be done during the season of Lent. I hope everyone will complete and return the questionnaire as the survey will provide us with very helpful information on the views and opinions of parishioners. An experienced researcher has been commissioned and all information provided will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
The three Services held in the Parish were well attended and went very well indeed. We are continuing to build close friendships with other Christians and we look forward to further gatherings.

Whist Drive
The All Saints' Whist Drive will be held on Friday 7th February at 8.30 p.m. and a warm invitation is extended to everyone.

Messy Church
The next Messy Church for children and their parents in the Parish will be held at 11.00 a.m. on Sunday 23rd February and at 11.00 a.m. on Sunday 23rd March in All Saints'.

March Lectures
Two special lectures will be held on Sunday evenings in March. At the first lecture on 23rd March, at 8.00 p.m., Mr. Seamus Mallon, the former Northern Ireland Minister and politician will be the speaker. On Sunday 30th March at 8.00 p.m., the speaker will be Fr. Peter McVerry. We are exceptionally fortunate that two very distinguished people have accepted our invitation and I hope there will be a very good attendance at the lectures.

All Saints' Bi-Centenary
All Saints' is celebrating the Bi-Centenary of the present church this year and a number of special events are being planned. The launch of the Bi-Centenary will take place on Easter Sunday, 20th April.

Confirmation
The Confirmation Classes will be commencing shortly and I would be very grateful if any parents who would like their children to be confirmed would contact me.

Holy Baptisms
We have recently welcomed into God's family through baptism Maja and Annika Nilsson. We will continue to pray for them and their parents and Godparents.

Bereavement
Miss Jackie Evans passed away after a short illness on Friday 24th January and her funeral took place on Monday 27th January. Miss Evans was almost 99 years of age and had lived a very active life up until 14 years ago when she entered Newbrook Nursing Home. Miss Evans's love for life, coupled with her marvellous tenacity, and her passion for the welfare of animals and plants in God's creation, won the respect of her family, wide circle of friends and the management and staff at Newbrook Nursing Home. At the funeral the support and care provided by her family, dear friends and Newbrook was warmly acknowledged. We pray that Jackie, now in the fuller presence of God, may rest in peace.

Congratulations - to Pat and Paula Horan on the birth of their first Grandson Patrick, in America

Rev Jean Wynne - will be on call for all emergencies from Monday 10th - Monday 17th February.

With God's blessings,
Rev. Alastair Graham, Rector
