MULLINGAR UNION OF PARISHES
Issue 66 "UNION NEWS" August 2015
As the theme of this year's Heritage Week is 'Industry and Design', we will be running in All Saints'
a "Create your own Church Window" workshop. At the workshop children up to 12 years of age
will be able to design and paint their own stained glass church window, using the transparency
card template which will be provided. The workshops will be held on Monday 24th and Wednesday
26th August from 2.00 pm - 4.00 pm. Places for each day are limited, so booking is essential. All
children must be supervised by a responsible adult for the duration of the event. There will be no
charge. For booking and further information please contact Karen at 085-7165625. All the
churches will be open during Heritage Week and we hope to welcome a good number of visitors. If
you are available to steward on any of the days, please give your name to the churchwardens in
each of the churches. Heritage Week provides a wonderful opportunity for people to see the very
rich ecclesiastical heritage we have in our Parish. I wish to thank everyone who will give so
generously of their time to welcome the visitors and steward at the churches.
Information Signs at Kilbixy
Four impressive signs have been erected at Kilbixy. Each sign provides very helpful information on
the different aspects of this very historical place. I would like to again thank Watson Mills and
Norman Black who did so much to prepare the information and to John Farrar for erecting the signs
so well. If you haven't already seen them I warmly recommend them to you. The Select Vestry has
decided to erect similar signs at the other churches.
Parish Vision Plan
We hope to commence the activities associated with the Parish Vision Plan at the beginning of
September. We will be sending a very attractive and informative wall-planner to every home in the
Parish. This is a very exciting time for the Parish and I sincerely hope parishioners will be able to
support the different activities and help us build up a very vibrant and dynamic Parish community.
Songs of Praise and Parish Barbeque 13th September
On Sunday 13th September the first event in the Parish Vision Plan will be a 'Songs of Praise' and a
Barbeque in All Saints' at 11am. I hope everyone in the parish will come, young and old for this
Autumn Whist Drive
A special Whist Drive will be held in All Saints' Parish Hall on Friday 2nd October in memory of
Elsie Bourke. Elsie's organisation for the Whist Drives over so many years was greatly appreciated
by everyone and her lovely family would like to hold a special Whist Drive in memory of her. I hope
it will be very well supported and I invite you to mark this date in your diary.
Gardening at the Remembrance Garden- All Saints'
The next 'gardening evening' will be on Tuesday 25th August at 7.30pm. A good number of
gardeners attended in July and I thank them for their good work. Everyone will be welcome as a
We welcomed into God's family at Kilbixy on Sunday 19th July, Sophie Doran, the sister of Clodagh.
It was a lovely occasion and we will continue to remember Sophie, her parents and godparents in
our prayers as she begins her journey of faith.
We offer our deepest sympathy to Picia Harvey-Kelly and her adult children Caroline, Chessy and
Hugh, the grandchildren and all the members of the wider family following the death of William.
William Harvey-Kelly was exceptionally well known in the Parish and wider community. He had a
very distinguished military career and also distinguished himself through his philanthropy and
involvement in equestrian sports. His presence and humanity won him wide respect and
admiration, his leadership in both the Parish and the wider community was distinctive and
empathetic. He will certainly be sadly missed. William had a very strong Christian faith and we
pray that he is now at rest in the fuller presence of God and that Picia and the family will feel
comforted through the love of God and the support and care of their family and friends.
August, of course, is the month when many people take a holiday. Olive and I will be visiting the
family in the United States from Monday 10th August until Wednesday 2nd September. While we
are away the Rev. Damien O'Cathain will be available to deal with any pastoral emergencies.
Damien's mobile phone number is 0879199449 and his landline is 0449661123.If you need to call
upon his services you will find him a most delightful person. The Rev. Hazel Scully will be providing
the pastoral cover from 29th August to 2nd September. Her number is 0872813956. Hazel is very
well known to you all and she, too, will provide wonderful pastoral care if needed.
During this holiday month a number of clergy are not available to assist in the Parish. As a result, I
have had to alter the usual rota for Church Services and I hope you will understand. Next month, in
September, we will revert to the usual rota. However you are warmly invited to attend another
Church for one of the services if there is no service in the Church you normally attend.
You may like to keep in touch with the Parish through the website and your family and friends may
also like to have the web address. The address is www.mullingarunionofparishes.net. I encourage
you to continue to look at the website and to also advise your family and friends about it.

If you are going on holidays this month I hope you have a lovely time and, if you have just returned
from holidays, I hope you feel well rested and relaxed.
With God's blessings,
