MULLINGAR UNION OF PARISHES
Issue 74 "UNION NEWS" April 2016
The celebration of Easter in the Parish this year was a really lovely occasion and all the
ceremonies went very well. The special Sacred Music and Word Service on Good Friday was
very moving and it was nice to see on Good Friday and at the Easter Services visitors who had
come to join us for these special occasions. The celebration of the Resurrection this year is
particularly poignant as we can't but be aware of the many challenges in the world and the
all too frequent human tragedies. Christianity offers a real hope as, through the Resurrection,
God begins to put the world to rights. I think some people in Ireland may have become a
little bit blasé about the place of the Church and others may just support the Church from
afar without any participation. I sincerely hope that Christians will appreciate how important
our faith and practice is in modern Ireland and will show their support through attendance at
Easter Thank Yous
I would like to thank all the parishioners who took such trouble to prepare the churches for
Easter this year. The floral decorations in each of the churches were simply beautiful and
helped inspire our worship of God at this Eastertide. I am also very grateful to the
churchwardens for the good work they undertook and to our organists and choir whose
playing and singing, as usual, was enormously uplifting. I would also like to thank all those
who took part in the Good Friday Service of Sacred Music and Word and for helping to make
the occasion so memorable.
On Sunday 10th April there will be a special Service of Thanksgiving in Kilbixy to mark
Watson's 70th consecutive year of service on the Select Vestry. This is a truly outstanding
achievement and I am sure a large number of parishioners will want to attend the Service. An
Anniversary Luncheon will be held after the Service in the Bloomfield House Hotel and if you
would like to attend and have not already confirmed your attendance would you please
telephone Alice Bannon on 086-7300234 as soon as possible.
The Children's Passion Musical, which was held on 20th March, was an outstanding success.
This year there were 40 children taking part in the musical and I would like to again sincerely
thank Diane Ashmore who directed the Musical and the Children's Choir, and to Siobhan
Murphy who prepared the two dance routines. This has now become an annual event which
gets better year by year.
Boys' Brigade and Girls' Association
I would like to congratulate all the young people who did so well in the Talent Competition in
Edenderry on Friday 11th March. They were simply terrific and their performances were
acknowledged in the prizes they won.
The monthly Bible Study will be held in Killucan church at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday 16th April.
'Good for the Sole' Appeal
I would like to thank everyone for their support for the Good for the Sole, Bishops' Appeal.
We have already donated €2,500 and more money has been donated which will be passed on
to the organisers. The Cookery Demonstrations by Robin and Lesley Aust were very enjoyable
and we look forward to future demonstrations.
Monthly Coffee Morning
The monthly coffee morning will be held on Wednesday 6th April from 10.30 a.m. in All
Saints'. All parishioners and friends are warmly invited.
"Tiny Tots Morning"
The Tiny Tots Friday mornings will resume on Friday 8th April after the Easter holidays.

General Easter Vestry
The General Easter Vestry will be held on Wednesday 27th April at 8.00 p.m. in All Saints'
Parish Hall. This is a very important occasion in the Parish and I hope it will be very well
supported by parishioners. At the meeting the incoming Select Vestry will be both appointed
It is hoped to organise some special Parish Outings from time to time throughout the year to
places of interest. The first outing will be held on a Saturday in June or July, and the organiser
of the outings will be Brigid Geoghegan. These outings will provide an opportunity for
enjoyment and good company and if you would like to book your place on the bus, could
you please contact Brigid on 087-6157052. I really hope this initiative will be very well
supported and again it provides an opportunity for the Parish to come together as a
community and to enjoy a special occasion together.
The Confirmation will be held on Sunday 29th May in All Saints' church. I hope you will
remember all the young people who will be confirmed in your prayers as they prepare for
this important occasion in their lives.
We welcomed into God's family through holy baptism Elliot McNicholas on Sunday 28th
February and we continue to remember his parents and godparents in our prayers.
We offer our deepest sympathy to four families who have recently been bereaved. David Bentley,
who had moved to live in the Parish from England just over nine years ago, passed away suddenly
after a short illness. His funeral service was held in All Saints' and we offer our deepest sympathy
to his sister Brenda, Reg, and the family. David was greatly loved and his presence will be very
sadly missed. We pray that now, in the fuller presence of God, he may rest in peace.
We offer our deepest sympathy to Nicole Cole and Liam Smith, following the sad passing of her
father Bill. His funeral was held in Yellow Bog Church, Kilcullen on Tuesday 22nd March. Bill had
borne his illness with great dignity and will be very sadly missed by his family and by his Parish.
He was a stalwart in his Parish and a deeply loved husband, father and grandfather. We pray that
he may rest in peace.
Violet Cuthbertson's brother, Freddie Stewart, passed away after a short illness. Freddie was a
parishioner in Mountmellick and was a highly respected businessman. We offer Violet and her
family our deepest sympathy at this sad time and also pray that Freddie is now at peace in God's
Alfred Schmidt passed away and his ashes were buried in Ballyglass on Easter Saturday. Fred, as
he was affectionately known, had been the Manager at Knockdrin for many years and was very
highly respected. He was also a very faithful parishioner and was very supportive of his Parish.
We offer our deepest sympathy to his children Brigid, Rosie and Richard and the members of their
families. We pray that Fred rests in peace.
