MULLINGAR UNION OF PARISHES
Issue 76 "UNION NEWS" June 2016
Mr. Pat Horan - Principal All Saints' School
Mr. Horan will be retiring as Principal at the end of this term after a wonderful and inspiring
teaching career. His legacy is immense and he will be enormously sadly missed by all of us
who have the privilege of working with him and benefiting from his outstanding gifts as a
teacher. There will be a special Thanksgiving Service on Sunday 26th June at 11.00 a.m. in All
Saints'. I warmly invite everyone to attend and I am sure everyone who has had the privilege
of knowing Mr. Horan will want to attend and offer their thanks and appreciation to him.
The Parish Sale, which was held on Saturday 21st May, was a most enjoyable and successful
occasion. The Sale realised €6,756 net, which was an outstanding sum and shows a 25%
increase over last year. I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful support and help.
Not only was the Sale financially successful but it was also so enjoyable and sociable.
The Confirmation Service held on Sunday 29th May was very inspiring and uplifting. We
would like to thank Bishop Storey for the lovely way she conducted the whole ceremony and
we offer our congratulations to Emily, Judith, Silver, Niall, Lewis and Emily who were
confirmed. We will continue to pray for them and their families.
Prayers for Young People
Next Sunday 5th June, at all Services, prayers will be offered for the young people in the
Parish undertaking their Junior Certificate and Leaving Examinations. The young people will
be most welcome to attend church next Sunday and will find themselves uplifted in God's
presence as they undertake these important exams. We wish them all the very best in sitting
Rectory Lunch - Sunday 12th June 12.30 p.m.
Olive and I warmly invite everyone in the Parish to lunch in the Rectory on Sunday 12th June.
The Services in each of the churches will be held at 11.00 a.m. in order to enable people to
arrive in good time. There is an invitation in the Union Notes this month and, to assist the
catering, we would be very grateful if people could let us know if they are able to come.
Parish Charity Concert
A special Charity Concert will be held on Saturday 18th June in All Saints' at 8.00 p.m. The
Concert will be given by an outstanding musical choir - The Dublin Airport Singers. All the
proceeds will be going to support an orphanage in Africa. This is an opportunity for us as a
Parish to come together to support a very worthwhile cause and I do urge you to purchase
tickets and come with your family and friends.
Songs of Praise - Sunday 19th June at 11.30 a.m. in All Saints'
We are going to have a most inspiring Service with Songs of Praise led by the voices of the
Dublin Airport Singers and the Senior Parish Choir. Do come and enjoy singing your favourite
Next month there are special meetings being held in the Diocese which you are warmly
invited to attend. Details are on display in each of the Parish churches.
Almoritia Fundraiser - Saturday 2nd July
There will be a special Sale in the Community Centre in Milltown to raise funds for the work
of restoration on Almoritia church. At the Sale there will be a variety of items for purchase
and the organising Committee will be delighted if people could bring along items of furniture,
clothing and general bric-a-brac. Already a number of vintage clothes have been donated.
Parish Remembrance Sunday - 10th July
We are going to hold a special Parish Remembrance Service for former parishioners and
family loved ones and friends. As you are aware, the Roman Catholic Church mark this
remembrance at Cemetery Sunday. In the Church of Ireland we are going to mark it with a
special church Service at 11.00 a.m. in All Saints'. I warmly and sensitively invite parishioners
to come when, in a spirit of Christian hope, we can remember all our loved ones.
The monthly Bible Study will be held in Killucan on Saturday 4th June at 10.30 a.m.
We offer our deepest sympathy in the Parish to Claude and Anna Roulston following the
death of Claude's sister in England, and to Michael and Cathy Finnegan following the passing
of Cathy's father in Greystones. Claude's sister Ina spent most of her life in England and
distinguished herself in many ways winning admiration and affection. Cathy's father will be
warmly remembered and Cathy's tender care of him during his last illness was truly
We also offer our deepest sympathy to all the Farrars and Clendennings and other family
members following their recent family bereavement, and to Pat Fletcher and his family
following the burial of ashes of his brother Brian who was brought back from England for
burial in Stonehall.
We offer our deepest sympathy to Rev. Jean Wynne whose husband Charlie passed away
after a long illness. His funeral service took place in Rathangan Parish Church on Sunday 22nd
May. Jean's loving care of Charlie, particularly through his illness, was simply outstanding and
provided him with an enormous comfort. Charlie touched the lives of everyone he met in a
very special way and particularly within his family, where he was adored and admired. In
offering Jean our deepest sympathy we pray that she will experience God's comforting care
and also find comfort in her loving memories of the years she spent with Charlie.
On Friday 27th May Ivan Bourke and the family met in Ballyglass for prayers on the first
anniversary of Elsie's death. We continue to remember them in our prayers and Elsie, of
course, continues to be fondly remembered in the Parish.
We offer our deepest sympathy to Julie Megan following the very sad and untimely death of
her sister. Julie's sister unfortunately suffered from a very serious illness at the end of her life
and, despite the challenges she had, she displayed immense courage. We pray that she is safe
in the presence of almighty God.
We pray that each of the families will be comforted by their loving memory of their dear one
and by the support and prayers of family and friends and parishioners in this Parish.
Christians have the assurance of knowing that God's promises are true. We pray that those
who have passed away, while out of our sight, will be safe in God's presence and may rest in
